EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the majesty and grandeur of the RMS Lusitania as she was launched on September 7, 1907, in the presence of thousands of onlookers. At the time of her launch, the Lusitania held the title of the largest vessel in the world, measuring an impressive 785 feet in length and boasting a top speed of 25 knots. The British ocean liner was a marvel of modern engineering, designed for luxury transport across the Atlantic. However, the Lusitania's storied history is not limited to her impressive launch. In May 1915, during World War I, the ship was tragically sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland. The sinking of the Lusitania resulted in the deaths of over 1,100 passengers and crew members, including 128 American citizens. The incident was a significant turning point in the war, leading the United States to enter the conflict. Despite the well-documented facts surrounding the sinking of the Lusitania, conspiracy theories continue to circulate. Some believe that the British government intentionally put the ship in harm's way to draw the United States into the war. Others argue that the German submarine commander, Walther Schwieger, was given incorrect information about the Lusitania's cargo, which included munitions. Regardless of the truth behind these theories, the sinking of the Lusitania remains a pivotal moment in maritime and military history. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the ship's storied past and the enduring mystery that surrounds her final voyage.
