EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Indian Fritillary Butterfly, Argynnis hyperbius, with both the female and male specimens beautifully captured in their intricate detail. The Indian Fritillary, also known as the Common Tiger or the Tephnia Fritillary, is a large and vibrant butterfly native to the Indian subcontinent. The female is depicted with a reddish-orange body and wings adorned with black spots and a row of white spots along the outer edge. The male, on the other hand, displays more striking colors, with bright orange wings that have black spots and a series of white, blue, and black lines. This exquisite illustration is taken from the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837. The work was produced under the supervision of John O. Westwood, a renowned English naturalist and entomologist, who was known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of insects. The handcolouring adds an extra layer of beauty to the already impressive lithographs, making them valuable collectors' items and essential references for entomologists and natural history enthusiasts of the 19th century. The Indian Fritillary Butterfly is a member of the Lepidoptera order, which includes moths and butterflies. The ventral (under) and dorsal (upper) views of the butterflies are depicted in the illustration, providing a comprehensive understanding of their anatomy and unique features. The Indian Fritillary is an important species in its ecosystem, playing a role in pollination and serving as a food source for various predators. Today, it remains a popular subject of scientific study and conservation efforts due to its beauty and ecological significance.
