EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by Wilson Lowry after a drawing by John Farey, offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricacies of metal casting as documented in Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in London in 1809. The image showcases an array of metal casting equipment, each tool essential in the open sand casting process. At the center, a sand casting is depicted between two flasks, which are used to contain and shape the sand mold. A trowel (1) is used to smooth the sand surface, while a ramming tool (2) is employed to compact the sand and remove any air bubbles. A lifting screw (5) is used to lift the casting out of the sand once it has cooled and solidified. The intricate cog wheel casting (7-10) is a testament to the precision and craftsmanship involved in metal casting. The molds for loam casting (11-13) are also shown, which utilize a different type of sand mixture for creating more intricate shapes. Additionally, the engraving illustrates various other casting techniques, such as the use of a trowel for spreading molten metal into the mold (6) and the intricate design of the cog wheel casting, which required great skill and attention to detail. Overall, this illustration provides a unique window into the metal casting process as it was practiced over two centuries ago.
