EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Forget after an original illustration by Oudart, showcases two of the most intriguing and iconic snakes from the natural world: the Painted Coral Snake (Micrurus corallinus, formerly known as Elaps corallinus) and the Egyptian Cobra (Naja haje, also spelled as Naja hoje or Naja haje). The image is taken from the "Universal Dictionary of Natural History" by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849. The Painted Coral Snake, native to Central and South America, is renowned for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Its body is adorned with red, black, and yellow bands, while its head displays a red cap and black eye stripe. This snake is venomous, and its bite can be fatal to humans. However, its bright colors serve as a warning to potential predators, as the snake is actually aposematic, meaning it advertises its toxicity to deter attackers. The Egyptian Cobra (Naja haje), on the other hand, is native to Africa. It is one of the oldest known venomous snakes, with evidence suggesting its presence in ancient Egypt dating back to 2500 BC. This cobra is characterized by its distinctive hood, which it raises when threatened, and its distinctive, hourglass-shaped markings. The Egyptian Cobra is a highly venomous snake, and its bite can cause severe pain, swelling, and even death. Despite its fearsome reputation, the Egyptian Cobra plays an essential role in Egyptian mythology and has been revered for thousands of years. This beautiful and intricate engraving not only showcases the stunning appearance of these two snakes but also highlights their unique characteristics and the fascination they have held for generations. The attention to detail in the handcoloring brings the image to life, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of these remarkable creatures.
