EDITORS COMMENTS
The Reredos at Whippingham Church on the Isle of Wight is a stunning example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and craftsmanship. This intricately carved stone sculpture, located at the east end of the church, depicts The Last Supper scene from the New Testament. The Reredos, meaning a screen or decorative panel behind an altar, was designed by the renowned English architect, G.F. Bodley, and executed by the talented sculptor, Thomas Earp. The work was completed in 1860 and is considered one of Bodley's finest achievements. The detailed relief carving showcases Jesus Christ and his twelve disciples, each depicted with individual expressions and gestures, as they share their last meal together before Jesus' crucifixion. The intricate design also includes various symbols, such as the chalice and the loaf of bread, representing the Eucharist. The Reredos is a testament to the rich history and artistic heritage of Whippingham Church and the Isle of Wight. The stonework's intricate details and lifelike portrayal of the Last Supper scene continue to captivate visitors and inspire awe. The sculpture's enduring beauty and significance make it a must-see attraction for anyone interested in religious art, history, or the Gothic Revival movement.
