The Roman emperor, dressed in imperial robes and adorned with a plumed helmet and caparisoned horse, is shown against the backdrop of mythological gods and goddesses. Theodosius I, who ruled from 378 to 395 AD, was a significant figure in ancient history, known for his role in establishing Christianity as the dominant religion in the Roman Empire. In this image, he is surrounded by various deities, including Jupiter, Juno, Hebe, Ganymede, the Graces, the Hours, and the Fates, among others. The zodiac signs, personified as gods and goddesses, are also present, such as Zephyr, Iris, and Nemesis. Ceres, Morpheus, and Proserpina are shown with Persephone, while Pluto and Bacchus are depicted with their respective symbols. Mars, Bellona, Cybele, Oceanus, Neptune, Hercules, Briareus, the Muses, Mnemosyne, Pomona, Vertunno, Flora, Mercury, Apollo, Diana, Minerva, Vulcan, Abundantia, Venus, and Amor are also represented. This engraving is taken from Giulio Ferrario's 'Il Costume Antico e Moderno,' published in Florence in 1842.
