EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a proud White Leghorn or Livorno cock and hen, showcasing their distinctive white plumage and elegant forms. The image, taken from Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry" published by Cassell in London in 1890, was produced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son using an illustration by J.W. Ludlow. The birds in the print were sent specifically for portraiture by Mr. Simpson, the Treasurer of the New York State Poultry Society. During the Victorian era, there was a craze for ornithology and exotic breeding, with poultry shows becoming increasingly popular. The White Leghorn, also known as the Livorno, was a particularly sought-after breed due to its productivity and attractive appearance. The cock in this print displays a proud and regal posture, with his bright red comb and wattles standing out against his white feathers. The hen, with her elegant tail feathers and plump body, looks equally impressive. Although the origins of the White Leghorn are debated, it is believed that they originated in Italy, specifically in the port city of Livorno. They were prized for their ability to lay large numbers of eggs, making them a popular choice for commercial and domestic use. However, during this time, there was also a darker side to the breeding and showing of poultry, with cockfighting remaining a controversial and popular pastime. Despite this, the intricate plumage and exotic allure of birds like the White Leghorn continued to captivate collectors and enthusiasts, leading to the production of beautiful prints and illustrations like this one. This chromolithograph is a testament to the beauty and fascination that birds held during the late 19th century, and remains an intriguing piece of poultry history today.
