EDITORS COMMENTS
National 'Notabilities': A Glimpse into the Exciting World of the 1925 Grand National through Caricature Illustrations by The Tout The Grand National, the world's greatest steeplechase, was set to provide its usual thrills and excitement on April 3, 1925. In anticipation of this much-awaited event, our artist, famously known as The Tout, sketched caricature illustrations of some of the most prominent jockeys, owners, and trainers who were expected to make a mark at Aintree Racecourse. The illustrations, titled "National 'Notabilities', Who will win the Grand National?" depict a lively and colorful scene filled with the excitement and tension that surrounded the Grand National. The jockeys are shown in various poses, some in deep concentration, while others seem to be in high spirits, ready to take on the challenging course. Among the jockeys, Fly Mask, who finished second in the previous year's race, stands out. Our artist fancies his chances of winning this time around, as evident from the confident expression on his face. The caricature of Fly Mask is accompanied by that of his horse, which appears to be in top form, with its muscles bulging and eyes focused on the finish line. The caricatures of the owners and trainers add to the vibrant atmosphere of the illustration. Some are shown in deep conversation with the jockeys, while others are seen giving last-minute instructions or offering words of encouragement. The overall effect is one of energy, anticipation, and the spirit of competition that defined the Grand National in the 1920s. This set of caricature illustrations offers a unique glimpse into the world of horseracing during the 1920s, providing a fascinating insight into the personalities and characters that made the Grand National such an iconic event in the 20th century.
