EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting depicts Phalacrocorax magellanicus, the Rock Shag or Magellanic Cormorant, as it was once known. The artwork was created during the second voyage of the renowned British explorer, Captain James Cook (1728-1779), led between 1772 and 1775 to explore the southern continent. The painting was produced by the naturalist George Forster (1754-1794), during this expedition, and is annotated as 'Pelecanus magellanicus.' Forster, a German naturalist, accompanied Cook on his voyages as a natural history scientist, documenting the new discoveries and species encountered during their travels. The painting captures the Rock Shag in its natural habitat, perched on a rocky outcrop by the sea. The long-legged bird, a member of the Phalacrocoracidae family, is characterized by its black plumage, white underparts, and distinctive yellow eyes. The Rock Shag is a sauropsid, a group of reptile-like vertebrates that includes birds and their closest living relatives. This exquisite illustration is a testament to the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterized the 18th century. It offers a glimpse into the natural world as it was observed and documented during this era of exploration, providing valuable insights into the diverse array of species that inhabit our planet. The painting is a masterpiece by Johann Georg Adam Forster, who, alongside his father Johann Christian Friedrich Höhne, contributed significantly to the natural history records of Cook's voyages. This artwork is a reminder of the rich legacy of scientific discovery and the enduring fascination with the natural world that continues to inspire us today.
