EDITORS COMMENTS
Regulus calendula, commonly known as the Ruby-crowned Kinglet, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored aquatint plate from John James Audubon's "Birds of America." This small, energetic bird is a member of the kinglet family, which is characterized by their long, curved bills and short, rounded wings. The Ruby-crowned Kinglet can be found in North America and Europe, and is named for the distinctive red feathers on the crown of its head, which are only visible when the bird is agitated or excited. The plant in the background of the plate is an Ericaceae, specifically the Calendula, or Marigold. This flowering plant is part of the large and diverse order of angiosperms known as the Ericales. The Calendula is an herbaceous perennial, with bright yellow or orange flowers that are often used in herbal medicine and as an ornamental plant. The plate was engraved, printed, and hand-colored by R. Havell & Son in London between 1831 and 1834. Audubon's "Birds of America" is considered one of the greatest works of natural history, featuring 435 life-size plates depicting various birds of America. This plate, Plate 195, showcases the intricate details of both the Ruby-crowned Kinglet and the Calendula, highlighting the beauty and diversity of both the natural world and the artistry of the time. The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a small, agile bird that belongs to the order of Aves, the class of Eutheria, and the subclass of Tetrapoda. It is part of the class of Avian, or birds, and the order of Passeriformes, or perching birds. The Calendula, on the other hand, is a flowering plant that belongs to the class of Magnoliopsida, or dicotyledons, and the subclass of Asterid. It is part of the order of Ericales, the family of Ericaceae, and the genus of Calendula. This plate is a testament to the rich biodiversity of both the natural world and the artistic traditions of the past.
