Emergency Ward on Board a Ship: The atmosphere in the seamen

Emergency Ward on Board a Ship: The atmosphere in the seamens mess on a cargo ship is tense. All eyes are fixed on the shaggy bundle that lies, half- wrapped in a sheet on the dining-table. And a doctor leans over the still body, performing an emergency operation to save an eye of the ships pal - a mongrel dog called Hans. The operation was carried out abroad the German coaster, Maria Schulte, as it lay at anchor in London Docks. Hans developed a serious eye complaint just before the ship arrived in London. Quarantine regulations prevented him from going ashore to an animal hospital. So the anxious crew sent an S.O.S to the Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals. Two vets were given permission to go abroad. After the operation, Hans was carried up to the deck to recover from the anaesthetic. Hours later, the Maria Schulte sailed for Russia with a cargo of timber. For little Hans, who was said to be " making a fine recovery" it will be a " get-fit" trip. After the operation....two seamen watch over Hans, covered with a coat, as he recovers on deck. July 1963 P000715

Emergency Ward on Board a Ship - A Tale of Compassion and Courage

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to July 1963, witnessing a remarkable scene aboard the German coaster, Maria Schulte. The atmosphere in the seamens mess is palpably tense as all eyes are fixed upon a shaggy bundle lying on the dining-table. It is none other than Hans, the beloved mongrel dog of the ship's crew. Hans had developed a serious eye condition just before reaching London Docks. Unfortunately, quarantine regulations prevented him from seeking treatment ashore at an animal hospital. Faced with this dire situation, the anxious crew sent out an S. O. S to the Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals. Responding swiftly to their distress call, two brave veterinarians were granted permission to board the vessel and perform an emergency operation on Hans' eye. With bated breaths and unwavering determination, they leaned over his still body in hopes of saving his sight. After hours of intense surgery and tender care from both vets and seamen alike, Hans was carefully carried up to deck where he could recover from anesthesia under watchful eyes. Covered with a coat for warmth and protection, two dedicated seamen stood guard over him as he embarked on what would be deemed a "get-fit" trip towards Russia with cargo timber. This heartwarming tale reminds us that even amidst challenging circumstances at sea, compassion knows no bounds. It serves as a testament to humanity's innate ability to extend kindness not only towards our fellow humans but also towards our loyal animal companions like little Hans – making it truly unforgettable.
