Artwork depicting the planet 51 Pegasi B & its sun

51 Pegasi B. Artists impression of the planet 51 Pegasi B orbiting its sun, 51 Pegasi. Two moons can be seen against the planet. This planet was discovered in 1995 by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz of Geneva Observatory, Italy. The star is a Sun-like star some 42 light years from Earth. The planet is about half as massive as Jupiter, and orbits only 7 million km from the star, equivalent to 1/6th of Mercurys orbit around the Sun. The surface temperature is probably over 1000 Celsius, and the rocks of the planet at least partly molten. The planet possibly has one side which permanently faces the star

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the enigmatic planet 51 Pegasi B and its radiant sun, 51 Pegasi. Created by talented artists, this impression offers a glimpse into an alien planetary system discovered in 1995 by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz of Geneva Observatory, Italy. Located approximately 42 light years away from Earth, this Sun-like star illuminates the celestial landscape. With two mesmerizing moons adorning its surface, the planet itself is about half as massive as Jupiter. However, what truly sets it apart is its incredibly close proximity to its star. Orbiting a mere 7 million kilometers from 51 Pegasi, which is only one-sixth of Mercury's distance to our own Sun. Such proximity comes at a cost; temperatures on this distant world are believed to exceed a scorching 1000 degrees Celsius. The very rocks that make up its terrain are likely partially molten due to these extreme conditions. Additionally, it is speculated that one side of the planet perpetually faces its blazing star. This stunning artistic representation not only celebrates the wonders of cosmology but also highlights humanity's insatiable curiosity about worlds beyond our own. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in unraveling the mysteries of space and fuels our ongoing quest for knowledge about distant planets like 51 Pegasi B.
