Coloured SEM of podocytes in the human kidney
Kidney glomerulus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of podocyte cells on a glomerulus in the kidney. Glomeruli are made up of a tight knot of blood capillaries covered in podocyte cells with swollen nuclei (one seen at upper centre) and thin extensions. These tiny filtration units remove toxic waste products from the blood. Filtration occurs through the filtration slits between the interlocking pedicles (the terminal extensions of the podocytes). Filtered fluid then passes into the cavity of the surrounding Bowmans capsule, and drains to the bladder as urine. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of podocytes in the human kidney. The image reveals a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of these specialized cells, which cover a glomerulus - a tight knot of blood capillaries within the kidney. The podocyte cells are depicted with swollen nuclei, one prominently visible at the upper center, and thin extensions that interlock to form filtration slits. These tiny filtration units play a crucial role in removing toxic waste products from our bloodstream. As we marvel at this mesmerizing snapshot, it is important to recognize that each glomerulus functions as an essential filtering unit within our kidneys. Filtered fluid passes through these interlocking pedicles and into the cavity of Bowman's capsule before ultimately being drained as urine into the bladder. The magnification used for capturing this image remains unknown; however, its impact on our understanding of human anatomy cannot be understated. This photograph serves as a reminder of the remarkable complexity and efficiency present within our urinary system. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the inner workings of our bodies. Let this visual masterpiece ignite your curiosity about how these microscopic structures contribute to maintaining our overall health and well-being.
