Giovanni Cassini, Italian astronomer

Giovanni Cassini (1625-1712), Italian astronomer. As director of the Paris Observatory, Cassini added greatly to our knowledge of the Solar System. He first worked out the rotational periods of Jupiter, Mars and Venus. He discovered four new moons of Saturn, and observed the gap in Saturns ring system (called the Cassini Division). He also produced the first accurate measurement of the distance between the Sun and the Earth. This portrait is based on a sculpture by Jean-Guillaume Moitte, held in the Paris Observatory

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Giovanni Cassini, an esteemed Italian astronomer whose contributions to our understanding of the Solar System were truly groundbreaking. Serving as the director of the Paris Observatory, Cassini made remarkable discoveries that expanded our knowledge of celestial bodies during the 17th century. With his meticulous research, Cassini accurately determined the rotational periods of Jupiter, Mars, and Venus. Furthermore, he unveiled four previously unknown moons orbiting Saturn and astutely observed a significant gap in Saturn's ring system now known as the Cassini Division. In addition to these achievements, Cassini achieved another milestone by providing humanity with its first precise measurement of the distance between Earth and the Sun. His dedication to unraveling astronomical mysteries earned him a place in history as one of Renaissance Europe's most influential scientists. The portrait depicted in this print is based on a sculpture created by Jean-Guillaume Moitte and currently housed within the Paris Observatory itself. The artwork beautifully captures Cassini's pensive expression while reflecting his immense contribution to planetary science. As we gaze upon this colored illustration from Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of Giovanni Cassini's extraordinary accomplishments but also his lasting impact on our understanding of space exploration and scientific progress.
