John R. Pierce, US satellite engineer

John Robinson Pierce (1910-2002), US communications satellite engineer and pioneer. Pierce studied at Caltech, and then worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories and became director of research there. He coined the term transistor, and carried out pioneering work on satellite communications in the 1940s and 1950s. This included work on the first artificial communication satellite, ECHO, launched in 1960, and on pulse code modulation (PCM). He later became professor of electrical engineering at Caltech (1970) and then Chief Engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He was awarded the 1960 Ballantine Medal
