Homo erectus man. Model of a male Homo erectus, an early type of human. Homo erectus, or erect man, lived between roughly 1.8-0.3 million years ago and originated in Africa. They were the first humans to leave Africa, reaching Asia and possibly southern Europe. H. erectus had prominent brow ridges and a projecting face, and some specimens had brain volumes of over a litre. They stood upright, being a bit shorter than modern humans, but more heavily-built.
