Pumpkin cut into Halloween lantern

Pumpkin. Pumpkin, Cucurbita pepo, among dead leaves. The pumpkin has been hollowed and has had a face cut into its skin. This was done in order to create a lantern (jack o lantern) in order to celebrate Hallowe en, an ancient festival observed in the USA, Britain and Ireland. Pumpkins are large fruits with a thick orange rind, firm flesh similar to the vegetable marrow, and numerous seeds. The flesh of the mature fruit, which ripens in the summer and autumn, is used for baking, making jam and for pies. Pumpkins are also used as livestock feed. Photographed in autumn in British Columbia, Canada. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © KAJ R. SVENSSON/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the essence of Halloween with a beautifully carved pumpkin lantern amidst a bed of fallen leaves. The vibrant orange hue of the pumpkin, scientifically known as Cucurbita pepo, stands out against the earthy tones surrounding it. Carefully hollowed and intricately cut to form a spooky face on its skin, this jack o' lantern is ready to illuminate the night. Halloween, an ancient festival celebrated in the USA, Britain, and Ireland, comes alive through this symbolic representation. Pumpkins like these are commonly used during this festive season due to their large size and thick orange rind. Not only do they serve as decorative lanterns but also have various culinary uses. The firm flesh resembling vegetable marrow can be baked into delicious treats or transformed into jam and pies. Photographed in autumn in British Columbia, Canada, this image showcases not only the cultural significance of Halloween but also highlights agriculture's role in our lives. Pumpkins are not just for carving; they also serve as valuable livestock feed. This photograph serves as a reminder of how mechanized farming practices contribute to land use efficiency while producing bountiful harvests. With its rich colors and intricate details captured by Science Photo Library, this print brings forth an enchanting ambiance that perfectly encapsulates both tradition and agricultural innovation during one of the most beloved celebrations worldwide - Halloween.
