Greetings Card : Radio galaxy, computer artwork
Cards from Science Photo Library
Radio galaxy, computer artwork
Radio galaxy, computer artwork. A radio galaxy is a type of active galaxy, having a core of emission in the middle of the galaxy, known as an active galactic nucleus (AGN). It is believed the radiation emitted from these is due to a central supermassive black hole attracting a large amount of material. In around 10% of active galaxies, the black hole and surrounding accretion disk produce narrow beams of energetic particles and magnetic fields, and eject them outward in opposite directions away from the disk. These are the radio jets (top left, bottom right), which emerge at nearly the speed of light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing computer artwork of a radio galaxy. Within this active galaxy lies an active galactic nucleus (AGN), emitting powerful radiation from its core. Scientists believe that this emission is a result of the gravitational pull exerted by a supermassive black hole at the center, attracting and consuming vast amounts of surrounding material. Remarkably, approximately 10% of these active galaxies exhibit narrow beams composed of energetic particles and magnetic fields, which are ejected outward in opposite directions away from the accretion disk surrounding the black hole. These extraordinary phenomena are known as radio jets and can reach speeds close to that of light. The illustration beautifully captures these magnificent radio jets emanating from the top left and bottom right corners with stunning detail. The vibrant colors depict various wavelengths emitted by this astrophysical spectacle, creating an otherworldly ambiance. This artwork not only offers us a glimpse into the fascinating world of astrophysics but also reminds us how vast and awe-inspiring our universe truly is. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our cosmic surroundings while highlighting the intricate beauty hidden within celestial objects like radio galaxies.
