EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the historical St Lukes Hospital for Lunatics in London, England. Founded in 1751 as the second mental asylum in the city, it found its permanent home on Old Street in 1786. The grandeur of this purpose-built building is evident from its impressive front facade stretching over an astounding length of 150 meters. Adjacent to the hospital stands the Anglican church of St Luke, completed in 1733 and known for its unique obelisk spire. Although no longer active since its closure in 1964, this architectural gem was later transformed into a concert hall. The artwork captures not only the stunning brickwork and intricate details of these structures but also provides insight into life during that era. From pedestrians strolling along the road to horse-drawn carriages passing by, it paints a vivid picture of bustling urban life. While today we recognize mental health as an essential aspect of overall well-being, this image reminds us of how far we have come in our understanding and treatment methods. In 1916, patients were relocated elsewhere while St Lukes Hospital became occupied by none other than the Bank of England. This remarkable piece from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate both architectural marvels and significant milestones within medical history.
