A Blizzard with Gusts - July 23rd, 1911, (1913). Artist: George Clarke Simpson
A Blizzard with Gusts - July 23rd, 1911, (1913). Pressure tube anemometer record. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Blizzard with Gusts - July 23rd, 1911" by artist George Clarke Simpson takes us back to a pivotal moment in history. The image is part of the Terra Nova Expedition, led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, which aimed to reach the South Pole and conduct scientific research. The photograph showcases a pressure tube anemometer record, capturing the intensity of a blizzard that struck on that fateful day. It serves as a testament to the harsh conditions faced by Scott and his team during their final expedition. Scott's ambition was not only to achieve scientific breakthroughs but also to be the first person to set foot on the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there just weeks earlier. Tragically, delayed by blizzards and depleted supplies, Scott and his remaining crew members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were eventually found eight months later along with their poignant diaries. This haunting image from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II reminds us of the bravery and determination exhibited by these explorers in pursuit of knowledge and adventure. It stands as both a tribute to their legacy and a reminder of the unforgiving nature of Antarctica's icy wilderness.
