Capitain Thomas Coram, 1740. Artist: William Hogarth

Capitain Thomas Coram, 1740. The philanthropist Thomas Coram (1668-1751) founded the Foundling Hospital after seeing the plight of children left abandoned in the streets, many of whom were young babies close to death. Poverty-stricken mothers would bring their children to the gate, and competition for places was fierce. Handel and Hogarth were among the eminent people who took an active interest in the activities of the hospital. From William Hogarth, by Austin Dobson. [Hachette Et Cie, Paris, 1904]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Captain Thomas Coram, painted by the renowned artist William Hogarth in 1740. In this portrait, we see a man who embodies compassion and determination. Captain Coram was a philanthropist with an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of abandoned children in 18th century England. Moved by the heartbreaking sight of infants left to die on the streets, poverty-stricken mothers would bring their children to the gates of his Foundling Hospital. The competition for limited spots was fierce, but Captain Coram's dedication ensured that many young lives were saved from despair. Notably, esteemed figures such as Handel and Hogarth actively supported and took interest in this noble cause. Their involvement speaks volumes about Captain Coram's impact on society. The monochrome composition adds depth to this historic moment frozen in time. It is a testament to both Hogarth's artistic skill and his recognition of Captain Coram's significant contribution towards poor relief and philanthropy. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded not only of one man's selflessness but also how art can immortalize acts of kindness that shape our world for generations to come.
