This stunning oil painting, created by Danish artist Vigilius Erichsen in the 18th century, captures the regal presence of Catherine II (1729-96), also known as Catherine the Great, who ruled as Empress of Russia from 1749 to 1782. Born as Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst in the Low Countries, Catherine's impressive rise to power began when she was married to the heir to the Russian throne, Peter III, in 1745. Upon Peter's death in 1762, Catherine seized the throne and embarked on a reign marked by significant reforms and territorial expansion. In this portrait, painted around 1750, Catherine is depicted wearing an elegant, colorful dress adorned with intricate floral patterns and a matching tiara.
