EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a Chevalier, or knight, of the Order of Seraphim in his "petit habit," or little Seraphim costume, as rendered by the skilled hand of Johan Abraham Aleander in the late 18th century. The Chevalier wears the formal attire of this prestigious chivalric order, which was founded by King Gustavus III of Sweden in 1778. The Order of Seraphim was one of the highest honors bestowed upon individuals in the Swedish court, and membership was limited to a select few. The knight is shown in full length, wearing a white shirt with a lace jabot, a red waistcoat, and breeches adorned with gold braid. His coat, also in red, is decorated with gold embroidery and features the distinctive Seraphim emblem on the left breast. The knight's hat, known as a "trois-quarts," is topped with a plume of white ostrich feathers. The print's intricate details, such as the lettering on the ribbon of the Order and the delicate folds of the fabric, are a testament to Aleander's exceptional artistic ability. The print, which is an etching, is a valuable historical and artistic document, providing a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Swedish court during the 18th century. It is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of this period and the importance of chivalric orders in shaping the social fabric of European society.
