EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo. Titled "Chronos, 1752" this chalk on paper study was created as a preliminary sketch for the frescoes in the staircase-hall of the Würzburg Residence in Germany. The original piece is housed at Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, an Italian Venetian painter and printmaker, left an indelible mark not only in his home country but also in Germany and Spain. Known for his grand frescoes adorning churches and palaces, he was revered as one of the most important artists of his time. His talent extended beyond large-scale works to include etchings and oil paintings. The illustration featured here is taken from "The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Volume II" by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln, published by The Pegasus Press in Paris during 1928. This volume serves as a testament to Tiepolo's artistic brilliance throughout the 18th century. In this particular image, we see Chronos depicted as an allegorical figure representing time. With meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of chiaroscuro technique, Tiepolo captures both power and vulnerability within this monochrome drawing. It is a testament to his ability to evoke emotion through art. As admirers gaze upon this print today, they are transported back centuries to witness firsthand the genius that made Giovanni Battista Tiepolo an iconic figure in art history.
