Chukchi Yurt and Fish-Curing, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. EDITORS COMMENTS
Chukchi Yurt and Fish-Curing, 1889: A Glimpse into the Past of Arctic Russia This photograph captures a moment in time from the late 19th century, depicting the Chukchi people of northeastern Russia engaging in their traditional practice of fish-curing inside their yurt. The image is from an album that documents the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea. The album, which belongs to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II, offers a unique insight into the lives of the local Chukchi people and the harsh Arctic environment. The photograph shows several Chukchi men and women, dressed in fur clothing, gathered around a large wooden table, preparing fish for preservation. The fish are spread out on the table, covered with salt, while the yurt in the background provides shelter from the cold and wind. The direct gaze of the Chukchi people in the photograph invites the viewer to witness their daily life and traditions. The yurt, a traditional dwelling of the Chukchi people, is a circular, felt-covered structure with a wooden frame. The use of tents and yurts as dwellings was essential for the nomadic Chukchi people, who lived in the harsh Arctic climate. The practice of fish-curing was a vital aspect of the Chukchi people's subsistence economy, allowing them to preserve fish for consumption during the long, cold winter months. The photograph provides a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Chukchi people and the meeting of the Russian frontier with the indigenous communities of the Arctic region.
