EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, created by M. Graham in the early 19th century, commemorates the Conquest of Banda by the English on August 9, 1810. The island of Banda-Neira, located in the Banda Sea between the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, is depicted in the map at the center of the illustration. The Dutch fortifications on the island, including Castle Belgica, are clearly marked, providing a detailed account of the strategic defensive positions. The Conquest of Banda was a significant event during the Napoleonic Wars, when the English, led by Captain Cole, successfully captured the island from the Dutch. The victory was a splendid achievement, as the Dutch had long held the Banda Islands for their valuable nutmeg and mace production. The print includes a 'General Chart of Defence for the Island Banda Neira,' which demonstrates the fire directions of the batteries and how one battery supports the other. The stations of piquet guards, alarm posts, and the corps of reserve are also indicated. The chart was prepared by P.I. Beetjies, a lieutenant engineer, under the order of Mr. William Jacob Cranssen, the Governor and Director of Amboina. This evocative watercolor painting, produced by M. Graham for Longman & Co., showcases the intricate fortifications of the Dutch colonizers in the East Indies, providing a glimpse into the colonial past and the strategic importance of the Banda Islands during the Napoleonic Wars. The black and white image, reminiscent of the monochrome palette popular during the 19th century, adds to the historical and nostalgic feel of the artwork. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, is one of the institutions that preserves this heritage art piece for future generations to appreciate.
