Eleanor and Frederick Pray, seated in the veranda room, Dom Smith, Vladivostok, Russia, 1900. Portraits no. 9 and 10 show husband and wife posed for a photograph apparently described in a letter from Eleanor Pray dated February 18, 1900: "On this mail I am sending you a small packet [of photos] most of which are for mother's album. The two of Ted and me are the ones Miss Morphew took yesterday and I like the little one ever so much. The big one I should also like if I had a nose in it and if Ted didn't look so small and henpecked."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1900, captures the married couple Eleanor and Frederick Pray in their veranda room at Dom Smith in Vladivostok, Russia. The image, taken by the renowned photographer Maud Morphew, shows Eleanor and Frederick seated comfortably in chairs, with a small table and a decorative rug between them. The room is filled with natural light and the couple exudes a sense of tranquility and contentment. According to a letter from Eleanor Pray, dated February 18, 1900, these portraits were taken the previous day and she particularly liked the smaller image of the two. In her letter, she mentions that she would also have preferred a better representation of her own nose and a more imposing appearance for her husband. The larger portrait, however, also holds a special place in her collection. This double portrait offers a glimpse into the domestic life of the Pray couple during their travels in Russia. The photograph is a testament to the enduring bond between the husband and wife, as well as the elegance and sophistication of the interior design and decoration of their temporary residence. The image, with its sepia tones and timeless charm, serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural exchange that characterized the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
