The Emperor of Russia's Steam-Yacht "Peterhoff", 1850. We regret to announce that the splendid steam-yacht...which was built in this country a few months since, expressly for the Emperor of Russia, has been entirely lost on her passage out to St. Petersburgh..."We had no sooner left the island [of Bornholm] than it blew a perfect hurricane, and continued blowing...we were startled by a terrific rumbling noise. We immediately ran on deck; when, to our horror, we found the Peterhoff half her length up a shallow reef of rocks. She immediately began to fill, and was not long before the water inside her was level with the sea". Very trying weather has since set in, and the last accounts speak of her loss. This photograph captures the majestic Imperial Steam-Yacht "Peterhoff" of the Emperor of Russia, as it gracefully sailed the waters in 1850. The yacht, a marvel of engineering and design, was built specifically for the Emperor in England and was en route to St. Petersburg when tragedy struck. Unfortunately, the Illustrated London News reported a devastating turn of events. Shortly after leaving the island of Bornholm, a violent storm hit with hurricane-force winds. The crew was taken aback as they heard a deafening rumble, rushing to the deck to find their worst fears realized: the "Peterhoff" was aground, half-submerged in a shallow reef of rocks. The yacht began to fill with water, and despite the crew's valiant efforts, it was soon clear that the vessel was doomed. The stormy Baltic Sea, notorious for its challenging navigation during this time of year, had claimed another victim. The last reports indicated the total loss of the "Peterhoff." This unfortunate incident marked a significant setback for the Emperor, who had eagerly anticipated the arrival of his new steam-yacht. The photograph stands as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable forces of nature and the fragility of human endeavors.
