Glimpse of Lake Champlain, from Summit, 1874. Creator: W. J. Linton
Glimpse of Lake Champlain, from Summit, 1874. View of Lake Champlain from Mount Mansfield in the Green Mountains, Vermont, USA. Mr. Fenn was three days on the summit of Mansfield, during all which time a dense, gray vapor enveloped all the facial features of that grand profile, and veiled the surrounding scene as completely as the curtain at the play shuts from view the splendors behind it. At last, the misty veil lifted a little; and we have as a result...a glimpse, through this parting vapor, of Lake Champlain and the distant Adirondacks. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
Glimpse of Lake Champlain, from Summit, 1874. A captivating view captured by W. J. Linton in his iconic print 'Glimpse of Lake Champlain, from Summit'. This breathtaking image showcases the majestic beauty of Lake Champlain as seen from Mount Mansfield in the Green Mountains of Vermont, USA. Linton's artistic talent and attention to detail are evident in this masterpiece. The viewer is transported to a time when Mr. Fenn spent three days on the summit of Mansfield, surrounded by a dense gray vapor that concealed the grand profile and veiled the entire scene like a theatrical curtain. However, after days shrouded in misty obscurity, nature finally revealed its splendors through a parting vapor. And there it was - an ethereal glimpse of Lake Champlain stretching out into the distance with the magnificent Adirondack Mountains serving as its backdrop. This print is part of 'Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In', edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton and Company in 1874. It stands as a testament to both Linton's skillful engraving technique and his ability to capture not only landscapes but also emotions evoked by nature's ever-changing moods. As you gaze upon this remarkable piece of artistry, let yourself be transported back to that foggy morning atop Mount Mansfield where for just a moment, clarity emerged from obscurity - revealing one man's fleeting encounter with natural beauty.
