Great Russians from different provinces. Pskov. Tver. Smolensk Kaluga. Tula, 1862. Sheet 3 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

Great Russians from Different Provinces: A Visual Ethnographic Record from the Mid-19th Century This evocative photograph, taken by Karlis Huns in 1862, captures a group of Great Russians from various provinces, including Pskov, Tver, Smolensk, Kaluga, and Tula. The image is part of the "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" (Ethnographic Description of the Peoples of Russia), a comprehensive two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg to commemorate the millennium of the Russian Empire. The work, dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, was the brainchild of Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. Volume 1 of the publication consists of 62 color illustrations, showcasing the traditional attire of various ethnic groups inhabiting the Russian Empire. This photograph is from sheet 3 of that volume. The ethnographic description was a significant undertaking for its time, reflecting the burgeoning interest in anthropology and ethnography during the mid-19th century. The work includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and their populations in the cities of the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map. Volume 2, comprised entirely of text, delves into the history, culture, language, and other aspects of the ethnic groups of the empire. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Great Russians from different provinces during a pivotal period in Russian history. The diverse attire and expressions on their faces underscore the rich cultural tapestry of the Russian Empire, making this image an invaluable historical document.
