Hindus. (Fire worshipers from the outskirts of Baku), 1862. Creator: Zakharov

Hindus. (Fire worshipers from the outskirts of Baku), 1862. Sheet 20 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Hindus. (Fire worshipers from the outskirts of Baku), 1862" offers a glimpse into the rich cultural diversity of the Russian Empire during the mid-19th century. Created by Zakharov as part of the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," this image is an integral part of a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg to commemorate the millennium of the founding of the empire. Volume 1, dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, presents a collection of 62 vividly colored illustrations showcasing various ethnic groups across Russia in their traditional attire. Accompanying these visual representations is a fold-out table providing valuable insights into population sizes and distribution among different cities within the empire. Additionally, readers are treated to an ethnographic map that color-codes regions based on inhabited ethnic groups. The second volume delves deeper into detailed essays written in French by Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia. These essays offer comprehensive accounts about each ethnic group's history, culture, language, and more - serving as invaluable resources for anthropological and historical research during that era. In this particular photograph, we witness Hindus engaged in fire worship on the outskirts of Baku. The scene captures their devotion and spiritual connection with nature through ancient rituals passed down through generations. This image not only highlights religious practices but also sheds light on Hindu communities residing within Russian territories at that time. As we explore this remarkable piece from Heritage Images' collection, it serves as both an artistic marvel and an important historical document preserving diverse cultures within one vast empire.
