Hungerford Market, Westminster, London, c1835. Artist: Charles Ingrey

Hungerford Market, Westminster, London, c1835. Four views of Hungerford Market, showing the River front, Strand front, fish market and hall. The new Hungerford Market near Charing Cross was built in Italianate style in 1831-1833. The architect was Charles Fowler, who also designed Covent Garden Market. The market was badly damaged when the adjacent Hungerford Hall burned down in 1854, and in 1862 the site was sold to the South Eastern Railway and Charing Cross Station was built on it

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling atmosphere of Hungerford Market in Westminster, London, circa 1835. The artist, Charles Ingrey, skillfully portrays four different views of this vibrant market. From the River front to the Strand front, and from the fish market to the grand hall, each scene showcases a unique aspect of this historical landmark. Built between 1831 and 1833 in an elegant Italianate style by architect Charles Fowler (renowned for his work on Covent Garden Market), Hungerford Market quickly became a hub of commerce and activity. Its popularity soared until tragedy struck in 1854 when a devastating fire engulfed the adjacent Hungerford Hall, causing significant damage to the market. Despite its setbacks, Hungerford Market remained resilient. In 1862, it was sold to the South Eastern Railway who transformed it into Charing Cross Station - forever altering its purpose but preserving its legacy as a central location for trade and transportation. This lithograph offers us a glimpse into nineteenth-century London life with its charming architecture lining both sides of busy streets. The vivid colors bring vibrancy to every detail captured within these walls - from bustling crowds haggling over fresh produce inside to boats gliding along the waterfront outside. Preserved by Guildhall Library and Art Gallery, this image serves as a testament to London's rich history and architectural heritage. It invites us to imagine ourselves strolling through those lanes long ago while marveling at how much has changed yet still remains familiar today.
