EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a print of The Inferno According to Dante, created between 1480 and 1500, from the Campo Santo Frescoes in Pisa, Italy. The artist behind this masterpiece is unknown, but it is attributed to Baccio Baldini. This 15th-century work is a depiction of Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the first part of his epic poem, Divina Commedia, or Divine Comedy. The print shows Lucifer, the devil, at the entrance of Hell, with three heads, each representing one of the three sins: pride, envy, and wrath. Dante, the poet, is depicted at the bottom, falling into the abyss. The inferno is a vivid and terrifying representation of Christian Hell, with various sinners suffering in different circles, each punished according to their sins. This engraving in black on paper is a rare and valuable example of the artistic and cultural heritage of Italy during the Renaissance period. It was once part of the Campo Santo Monumentale, a historic building in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, which houses a series of frescoes and engravings. Today, it is preserved and exhibited in the Prints and Drawings department of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate audiences with its intricate details and powerful symbolism. The Inferno According to Dante is a testament to the enduring legacy of Dante Alighieri's literary masterpiece and the artistic ingenuity of the Renaissance period. It invites us to explore the depths of human nature, the complexities of the human condition, and the power of art to capture and convey the human experience.
