EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the Jackknife Bridge in Chicago, Illinois, circa 1907. The image, created by an unknown photographer, showcases the industrial might of the early 20th century in the United States. The bridge, a marvel of engineering at the time, is seen here lowered to allow a Pueblo-class freighter, identified by its distinctive stack, to pass through. The bridge, also known as the Congressional Library Railroad Bridge or the Detroit Publishing Company Railroad Bridge, was a railroad bridge that spanned the Chicago River and connected the South Chicago Works of the U.S. Steel Corporation with the South Works Railroad. The bridge was unique in that it could be lowered to allow larger cargo ships to pass through, earning it the nickname "Jackknife Bridge" due to its ability to fold down like a jackknife. The photograph was captured using a dry plate negative glass 8 x 10 in, and the intricate details of the bridge's structure, the cargo boats, and the railroad cars are beautifully rendered. This historic image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the interconnectedness of railroad and maritime transportation during the early 1900s in the United States.
