'Cruden Bay Hotel, LNER poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced by London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire, and the railway's Cruden Bay Hotel, which LNER owned and managed. The poster shows an interior view of the hotel, here dubbed 'The Golfers' Hotel', with people sitting comfortably at tables and smoking. Artwork by Gordon Nicoll (1888-1959), who studied at Southampton Art School and at Hornsey under Frank Hillyard Swinstead. He was a member of the London Sketch Club. A landscape painter in watercolour and oil, he designed posters for the London North & Eastern Raliway (LNER), including a memorable series on railway hotels, of which this is an example. Poster produced for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to Snowdonia in Wales. In 1923 the LMS boasted in its booklet 'The Wonderland of Wales' that 'Snowdon and the Welsh Highlands are synonymous with scenery of ravishing beauty. Ancient story, sweet murmurs of mountain streams and soul stirring music of peasant people add to the delights of this romantic region as a holiday ground.'
Artwork by Charles H Baker, who was born in Ilminster and educated at Berkhamstead School. He was Head of Research at the Huntington Library, California. He painted landscapes in oil and designed posters for LMS

Visit the Festiniog Railway in the centenary Year of Pasenger Services 1965'. Poster produced for British Rail (BR), promoting the centenary anniversary year of the Festiniog railway in Wales, showing two steam locomotives about to pas one another on the tracks. Artwork by Terence Cuneo (1907-1996). Cuneo studied at the Slade and Chelsea Art Schools in London. He was a prolific painter and his compositions also included portraits, ceremonial and military subjects. Printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd
