Cruden Bay Hotel, LNER poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced by London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire, and the railway's Cruden Bay Hotel, which LNER owned and managed. The poster shows an interior view of the hotel, here dubbed The Golfers Hotel, with people sitting comfortably at tables and smoking. Artwork by Gordon Nicoll (1888-1959), who studied at Southampton Art School and at Hornsey under Frank Hillyard Swinstead. He was a member of the London Sketch Club. A landscape painter in watercolour and oil, he designed posters for the London North & Eastern Raliway (LNER), including a memorable series on railway hotels, of which this is an example. Bath - The Georgian City, BR poster, 1950

Poster produced by British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel to Bath, North East Somerset. The poster shows a view of the Pump Room, part of the baths built by the Romans who were drawn to Bath, which they named Aquae Sulis, because of its unique natural hot springs. In the 18th century, Bath was the most fashionable resort in England. Artwork by Claude Buckle (1905-1973), who originally trained as an architect, but later turned to pictorial art. He painted in both oil and watercolour and was a prolific poster artist for Great Western Railway (GWR) and BR. Much of his original poster artwork is held at the National Railway Museum

Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Caledonian Railway poster, 1900-1922

Poster produced for the Caledonian Railway, promoting rail travel to the village of Bridge of Allan. Visitors could take advantage of its golf, tennis, bowling, fishing and mineral wells. In the distance the National Wallace Monument is seen at the top of Allan Craig, commemorating Scotland's great freedom fighter, Sir William Wallace (c 1274-1305). The Caledonian Railway was founded in 1845 and three years later established the first through service between London and Scotland
