Launch of the Pram, c1911, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick

Launch of the Pram, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Launch of the Pram, c1911" captures a poignant moment from the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts, aiming to continue his scientific work in Antarctica and be the first to reach the South Pole. The photograph depicts an important event during their journey: the launch of a pram. This small boat was used by Scott's team to transport supplies across treacherous icy waters. It symbolizes their determination and resourcefulness in overcoming challenging conditions. However, despite their efforts, tragedy struck when they finally reached the South Pole on January 17th, 1912. To their dismay, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. This haunting image serves as a reminder of both human ambition and nature's unforgiving power. The loss suffered by Scott's expedition deeply impacted not only those involved but also captured global attention at that time. Today, this photograph stands as a testament to their courage and dedication in pursuit of scientific knowledge amidst extreme adversity. It is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II - an invaluable historical record published in London in 1913 - preserving forever the legacy left behind by these brave explorers who ventured into one of Earth's harshest environments.
