The London Hospital in 1753 - from an old print, 1876. Her Majesty having expressed a hope that her visit to open the "Grocers Company's Wing" might result in substantial benefit to the charity, a Special Appeal is now made to the Public in Aid of the Hospital Funds. The Committee are gratified to announce that her Majesty immediately after her visit...was pleased to mark her sense of the value and importance of this institution to the poor of the eastern half of the metropolis by a donation of Five Hundred Guineas. The fixed income of this Charity is only £14, 500 a year. The annual expenditure already exceeds £35, 000. There are upwards of 600 patients constantly in the wards, the number on a recent occasion rising as high as 641. Including those in the new wing, the London Hospital now contains 800 beds, and is, consequently, the largest institution of the kind in the Kingdom'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts The London Hospital in 1753, as it appeared over two centuries ago. The image, created in 1876, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the hospital's grandeur and the bustling activity surrounding it. At the time, the hospital was undergoing a significant expansion, with the Grocers' Company contributing to the construction of a new wing. Her Majesty's visit to open the new wing in 1753 was met with great anticipation, as she expressed her hope that her presence would bring substantial benefits to the charity. In response to this, a special appeal was made to the public in aid of the Hospital Funds. The Queen's gracious donation of Five Hundred Guineas was a testament to her belief in the institution's value and importance to the impoverished residents of the eastern half of London. The London Hospital, with a fixed income of only £14,500 a year, was already struggling to meet the annual expenditure, which exceeded £35,000. Despite these financial challenges, the hospital continued to provide essential care to over 600 patients, with the number occasionally reaching as high as 641. With the addition of the new wing, the hospital now boasted 800 beds, making it the largest institution of its kind in the Kingdom. This print not only serves as a historical record of The London Hospital in 1753 but also highlights the enduring spirit of charitable giving and community support that has defined this esteemed institution for centuries.
