Main Physiographic Features of the Koettlitz Glacier, 1913
Main Physiographic Features of the Koettlitz Glacier showing the Pinnacle Ice in the Western half and the Finger Valleys radiating from the Cwms of the Lister Scarp, 1913. From drawings by Edward Pay, showing weathered and piecrust ice. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the main physiographic features of the Koettlitz Glacier, taken in 1913. The image vividly captures the awe-inspiring landscape, with its intricate details and natural wonders. In the western half of the glacier, we can see the magnificent Pinnacle Ice standing tall against the backdrop of a vast icy expanse. Radiating from the Cwms of the Lister Scarp are numerous Finger Valleys, carving their way through this frozen terrain. The photograph is part of Scott's Last Expedition, which was led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Departing from London on 1 June 1910, this expedition aimed to continue scientific research and be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Unfortunately, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies during their return journey, Scott and his team perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with their diaries—a poignant reminder of their valiant efforts and ultimate sacrifice. This remarkable print not only serves as a testament to Scott's ambition but also highlights Edward Pay's exceptional skills as a photographer in capturing both weathered ice formations and piecrust ice textures. It stands as an enduring tribute to these brave explorers who ventured into one of Earth's most unforgiving landscapes in pursuit of knowledge and adventure.
