The Midnight Sun in McMurdo Sound, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Midnight Sun in McMurdo Sound" captures the awe-inspiring beauty of the Antarctic landscape during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting as part of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), this image showcases the ethereal glow of the midnight sun casting a golden hue over McMurdo Sound. Scott's expedition was a remarkable scientific endeavor, with a diverse team that included geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and more. Their mission was to continue important research in Antarctica while also aiming to be the first to reach the South Pole. However, upon their arrival on January 17th, 1912, they were met with crushing disappointment. The Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them to this historic achievement by a month. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies and diaries were discovered – an enduring testament to their bravery and determination in pursuit of scientific knowledge and exploration. This poignant photograph from "Scott's Last Expedition" serves as both a visual tribute to these intrepid explorers and a reminder of the harsh realities faced by those who dare venture into Earth's most unforgiving landscapes.
