Napoleon Bonaparte in 1809, (1896). Artist: Gustave Kruell
Napoleon Bonaparte in 1809, (1896). Napoleon I Bonaparte (1769-1821), Emperor of France from 1804. Napoleon enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and embarked on a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to the remote island of St Helena where he died. Engraving after the painting by Rene-Theodore Berthon. From Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume III, by William Milligan Sloane. [The Century Co. New York, 1896]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Napoleon Bonaparte in 1809, showcasing the remarkable talent of artist Gustave Kruell. Napoleon I Bonaparte, known as Emperor of France from 1804, experienced an extraordinary journey within the French Revolutionary army. Rising swiftly through the ranks, he orchestrated a coup in 1799 to overthrow the government and became the first consul and de facto ruler of France. In his pursuit of power, Napoleon declared himself Emperor in 1804 and embarked on a series of military campaigns across Europe known as the Napoleonic Wars. Notable victories at Austerlitz and Jena solidified France's dominance over much of the continent. However, his ambitious nature led him to embark on a disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812. The subsequent defeat at Leipzig in 1813 forced his abdication and exile to Elba. Despite this setback, Napoleon managed to escape in 1815 and raised another army but was ultimately defeated by Wellington at Waterloo. His final exile took place on St Helena, a remote island where he spent his remaining years until his death in 1821. This engraving after Rene-Theodore Berthon's painting is featured in "Life of Napoleon Bonaparte". Volume III by William Milligan Sloane (The Century Co. , New York, 1896). Through this powerful image captured by Kruell's artistic prowess, we are reminded not only of Napoleon's meteoric rise but also his ultimate downfall - a testament to both ambition and fate intertwined with one man's indelible mark on history.
