Opening of the Great North of Scotland Railway - The Huntly Station, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Opening of the Great North of Scotland Railway - The Huntly Station, 1854. Locals turn out for the arrival of the first steam train in their town. The formal opening of this line, extending railway communication forty miles north from Aberdeen, in all but unbroken connection with the great railway system throughout the kingdom, took place...The special train started from Kittybrewster, Aberdeen, at eleven o'clock...consisting of twenty-five carriages, drawn by two engines, and containing the directors and officials of the line, with a number of other gentlemen, amounting in all to about 400...The journey from Aberdeen to Huntly occupied two hours, and the scenery along the line, though not entitled to be called striking is yet very pleasing'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the Opening of the Great North of Scotland Railway at Huntly Station in 1854. The image is filled with excitement and anticipation as locals turn out to welcome the arrival of the first steam train in their town. The formal opening of this railway line extended communication forty miles north from Aberdeen, connecting it with the extensive railway system throughout the kingdom. The special train, consisting of twenty-five carriages and drawing two engines, departed from Kittybrewster, Aberdeen, at eleven o'clock, carrying the directors and officials of the line, along with other distinguished gentlemen, totaling approximately 400 people. The journey from Aberdeen to Huntly took just two hours, and the scenery along the line, though not particularly striking, was described as 'very pleasing' in the Illustrated London News report of the event. The crowd gathered at Huntly Station, dressed in the fashion of the nineteenth century, eagerly await the arrival of the train. Men and women, dressed in hats and top hats, press and newspaper representatives, and railway workers all mingled together in the festive atmosphere. The marquee and tents set up for the occasion add to the sense of celebration, and the steam train, billowing smoke, stands proudly in the foreground, symbolizing the dawn of a new era in transportation. This evocative photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News, provides a glimpse into the past, offering a fascinating insight into the ceremonial opening of the Great North of Scotland Railway in Huntly, Scotland, in 1854.
