Petty Officer Edgar Evans, R. N. 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Petty Officer Edgar Evans, R.N. 1911, (1913). Evans (1876-1912) with fur gloves and an ice-axe, boxes of supplies in the background. He died on the return journey from the South Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures Petty Officer Edgar Evans, a member of the Terra Nova Expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken in 1911 by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, the image showcases Evans wearing fur gloves and holding an ice-axe, with boxes of supplies visible in the background. Tragically, Evans met his untimely demise during the return journey from the South Pole. The final expedition aimed to be the first to reach this elusive destination while conducting extensive scientific research. Departing London on 1 June 1910, Scott's team consisted of various experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and meteorologists. Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers - finally reached their long-awaited goal on 17 January 1912. However, their joy was short-lived as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there a month earlier. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their arduous return journey from the Pole, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found alongside heart-wrenching diaries documenting their struggles. This photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , offering a glimpse into one man's courageous spirit amidst unforgiving Antarctic conditions.
