Petty Officers Crean and Evans Exercising Their Ponies in the Winter, 1911, (1913)

Petty Officers Crean and Evans Exercising Their Ponies in the Winter, 1911, (1913). Expedition members Tom Crean (1877-1938) and Edgar Evans (1876-1912). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the indomitable spirit of Petty Officers Crean and Evans as they exercise their ponies in the harsh winter of 1911. The image is a poignant reminder of the Terra Nova Expedition, led by renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Undertaken from 1910 to 1913, this final expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also achieving the historic feat of reaching the South Pole. Alongside geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others; Tom Crean and Edgar Evans played crucial roles in this ambitious venture. On January 17th, 1912, Scott and his team finally reached their long-awaited destination only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, it was not until March that tragedy struck. Scott and his remaining crew members perished in their valiant pursuit. Eight months later their bodies were discovered along with poignant diaries detailing their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This photograph serves as a testament to the courage displayed by these brave men who dared to explore uncharted territories for scientific progress. Taken from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , this image stands as a powerful tribute to those who sacrificed everything for knowledge and exploration.
