Poetry and Poets, 1800s. Creator: Francisco Goya
Poetry and Poets, 1800s. Poetry is symbolised by a woman with a lyre. She is seated near the top of Mount Helicon, abode of the muses, goddesses of poetry. Pegasus rears on the peak, striking a rock with his hoof to create the Hippocrene spring, source of poetic inspiration. Three poets - possibly Homer, Horace and Ovid - approach the spring. For this allegory Goya used Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, an emblem book from 1593 that was a standard reference for artists for centuries

EDITORS COMMENTS
Francisco Goya's masterpiece, "Poetry and Poets," painted in the 1800s, captures the essence of poetic inspiration and the connection between literature and mythology. The allegorical figure of Poetry is depicted as a woman seated gracefully atop Mount Helicon, the sacred abode of the Muses. She holds a lyre, the ancient musical instrument used to invoke the gods and inspire poetry. Pegasus, the mythical winged horse, rears on the peak, striking a rock with his hoof to create the Hippocrene spring, the source of poetic inspiration. Three poets, possibly Homer, Horace, and Ovid, approach the spring, their faces filled with deep concentration and awe. The cherubs, or Amorini, playfully sprinkle water from a cataract, symbolizing the flow of inspiration. The mountainous backdrop and natural phenomena add to the grandeur of the scene, while the use of color and light creates a sense of otherworldliness. Goya drew inspiration from Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, an emblem book from 1593, which was a standard reference for artists for centuries. This painting is a testament to Goya's artistic skill and his deep understanding of the literary and mythological traditions of his time. The Nationalmuseum in Sweden is fortunate to possess this heritage art piece, which continues to inspire and captivate audiences with its timeless beauty and message.
