Ponies Behind Their Shelter in Camp on the Barrier, 1911, (1913). Artist: Robert Falcon Scott

Ponies Behind Their Shelter in Camp on the Barrier, 1911, (1913). Four ponies wearing coats stand hobbled to a rope, with sledges nearby and a snow wall behind. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ponies Behind Their Shelter in Camp on the Barrier, 1911" by Robert Falcon Scott takes us back to a moment frozen in time during the Terra Nova Expedition. In this image, four resilient ponies stand hobbled to a rope, their coats protecting them from the harsh Antarctic weather. Nearby sledges and a towering snow wall serve as reminders of the challenging conditions faced by these brave explorers. Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this British Antarctic Expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to conduct groundbreaking scientific research. The team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing expertise, meteorology and physics. Scott's determination was unwavering as he sought to build upon his previous expedition's accomplishments while striving for new milestones. However, fate had other plans for him and his companions. Despite reaching their ultimate destination on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies along the way; they were met with disappointment upon discovering that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there just weeks earlier. Tragically delayed by adverse weather conditions and facing severe shortages of provisions on their return journey; Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to their surroundings at the end of March that year. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were discovered alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both human resilience in extreme circumstances and the sacrifices made in pursuit of knowledge and exploration.
