Robert Falcon Scott, Terra Nova Expedition, Antarctic
Robert Falcon Scott Terra Nova Expedition - important archive of 52 negatives taken by Lt. Henry Birdie Bowers during the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition that claimed the lives of Scott, Edward Wilson, Birdie Bowers, Laurence Titus Oates and Edgar Evans. The collection consists of 52 celluloid negatives, which are of similar size and format to those taken by Scott himself on the expedition. Both Captain Scott and Lt. Bowers were taught to use a camera by Herbert Ponting, the Terra Nova expedition photographer and the man responsible for capturing some of the most heroic images of the age of the Antarctic exploration. As a member of the Terra Nova shore party, Ponting helped set up the Terra Nova expedition Antarctic winter camp at Cape Evans, Ross Island. The camp even included a small dark room. The photos offer an incredible snapshot into the arguably most famous British Antarctic expedition of the 20th century. They show the brutal nature of the environment these brave men had to endure. The clarity of the images is truly remarkable and includes the expedition on Polar Marches, their camp, the ice shelves, mountains, pitching tents, having lunch, amongst others
