EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures the regal presence of William III, Prince of Orange, Stadholder of Holland, Zeeland, and Utrecht, and from 1689 to 1702, King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Painted by the Dutch artist Godfried Schalcken around 1692-1697, this oil on canvas masterpiece showcases the Prince's strong and determined character. The Prince is depicted wearing a wig and a richly decorated coat, with a white lace jabot at his neck. The portrait is set against a dark background, with the only source of light coming from a single candle held in the Prince's hand. The candle's flickering flame casts a warm, golden glow on his face, highlighting his features and adding a sense of depth and dimension to the painting. The use of candlelight was a popular technique during the Baroque era, and Schalcken was known for his mastery of this effect. The portrait is a testament to the Prince's status as a powerful monarch, ruling over multiple countries in Europe during a time of great political upheaval. Today, this historic work of art is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a treasure of Dutch and European heritage.
