EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the grandeur of The Punjaub Exhibition Building at Lahore in 1864. Designed by Mr. C. Baines, C.E., of the Punjaub Railway, this brickwork building with two small annexes was set to showcase the products, manufactures, and arts of the Punjaub region.
The exhibition promised a diverse display including shawl embroidery work, wire-drawing, gold and silver brocade work from Delhi, and gujerati-work steel inlaid with gold. Men were even planned to demonstrate their trades within a temporary annexe.
The image exudes a sense of imperial power as British flags fly proudly outside the building. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" captures a moment in history when Britain's influence extended far beyond its shores into India during the height of the British Raj.
As we gaze upon this historic photograph, we are transported back to a time when craftsmanship and trade were celebrated on an international stage. The intricate details captured in this print serve as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that existed within the walls of The Punjaub Exhibition Building over 150 years ago.
