EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking black and white portrait captures The Right Reverend Dr. Francis Fulford, the first Bishop of Montreal in Canada. Born in 1803 in Devon, England, Fulford was educated at Tiverton Grammar-School before attending Exeter College at the University of Oxford, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1824 and was later elected a Fellow. In 1832, Fulford was presented with the living of Trowbridge in the diocese of Salisbury. He later moved to Croydon in Cambridgeshire in 1842. In 1845, Earl Howe, the minister of Curzon Chapel in Mayfair, nominated Fulford for the newly-created see of Montreal. Fulford's distinguished career in the Church of England is evident in this elegant and formal portrait, which was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850. The image showcases Fulford's serious and contemplative demeanor, fitting for a man of the cloth. As the first Bishop of Montreal, Fulford played a significant role in the religious and cultural development of the Canadian city. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a prominent 19th-century churchman and provides a fascinating connection to the history of both England and Canada.
