Robert Boyle, 17th century Irish natural philosopher, (c1850)
Robert Boyle, 17th century Irish natural philosopher, (c1850). Boyle (1627-1691) was the seventh son of the first Earl of Cork. After Eton he travelled extensively in Europe, before commencing (with his assistant Robert Hooke) experiments on improving the air pump invented by Otto von Guericke. Boyles many experiments on air, vacuum, combustion, and respiration led to the publication in 1661 of his The Sceptical Chymist, in which he criticised current theories of matter, particularly those relating to alchemy. In 1662 he formulated Boyles Law, which states that the pressure and volume of gas are inversely proportional. He was a founder member of the Royal Society, though in 1680 he refused to become their first president as he was unwilling to take the oath of allegiance to the monarchy. Taken from the book Old Englands Worthies. (London, c1850)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Robert Boyle, a renowned 17th century Irish natural philosopher. Taken around 1850, this portrait showcases Boyle's distinguished appearance with his well-groomed hair and sophisticated attire. Born in 1627 as the seventh son of the first Earl of Cork, Boyle embarked on an extensive journey across Europe after completing his education at Eton. Fascinated by scientific exploration, Boyle collaborated with his assistant Robert Hooke to enhance Otto von Guericke's air pump through various experiments on air, vacuum, combustion, and respiration. In 1661, he published "The Sceptical Chymist" a groundbreaking work that challenged prevailing theories of matter and alchemy. Boyle's significant contributions to science include formulating Boyles Law in 1662 which states that the pressure and volume of gas are inversely proportional. He played a pivotal role as one of the founding members of the Royal Society; however, when offered its presidency in 1680, he declined due to his refusal to take an oath pledging allegiance to the monarchy. This engraving from "Old England's Worthies" offers us a glimpse into the life and achievements of this influential figure in natural philosophy. With his legacy firmly established as a chemist and physicist during Stuart England, Robert Boyle remains an iconic figure whose discoveries continue to shape our understanding of science today.
